Does A Sore Throat Really Mean You’re Getting Sick?

How many times have you woken up with a sore throat and thought to yourself, “No, I can’t get sick!” I’ve done it quite a few times myself.

That was before I knew any better though. There is actually something much more common that can give you a sore throat whether it’s flu season or not.

Another Side Effect Of Snoring

Yes, waking up with a sore throat can be caused by snoring. If you take a minute to think about it everything makes sense. When it comes down to it, snoring is caused by air moving through your airway while it is not completely open.

If your airway is not completely open then it takes more force to move the same amount of air through the smaller space. This not only causes the vibrations that are responsible for the sound of snoring, but this can also dry your throat out. When your throat becomes dry, it is much easier to irritate. Your throat is supposed to be moist at all times and when it isn’t, it lets you know.

What To Do

Fortunately this is an easier fix than some other problems, especially when compared to things like allergies and obesity. I have to say something about smoking here. Now, it doesn’t make any difference to me whether you smoke or not, I’m not judging.

However, I will tell you that smoking just before going to sleep can cause snoring and a sore throat. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it is a definite possibility. Smoking at this time can even give you a sore throat if you don’t snore. I also recommend a small glass of water before lying down for the night.

There are other things you can do to prevent this as well. This is something that certain anti-snoring mouthpieces will take care of. Some of them do not allow you to breathe through your mouth while wearing them. There is a downside to this kind of design though.

You may find that you have a hard time breathing when your mouth is full, even if you aren’t a mouth breather. The best recommendation I can make here is a tongue retaining mouthpiece. One of these will help to keep your mouth closed without completely preventing you from breathing this way.

One of the most overlooked solutions that you can take advantage of is changing your sleeping position. By simply sleeping on your side, you may be able to eliminate this issue. Sleeping on your side helps to keep you from snoring as well as preventing your jaw from hanging all the way open. Letting your jaw drop the whole way in this position is just not natural.

Wrap Up

If you have a sore throat it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are getting sick. It is quite easy for the throat to become irritated if you snore. However, there are a number of simple solutions that I have given you.

I’m sure that one of them will do the trick. If one of them doesn’t work then try another one, you could even try two. I’m confident that something I have told you will work.
